'Just For Fun' reading challenge and more!

As a book reviewer, I get the opportunity to read lots of books. I have more books in my house than I will ever be able to read, according to my husband. I get sent books from authors and illustrators, I get sent books from publishers and agents, and I can't resist buying or trading books either.

But sometimes, it can seem like a chore rather than an enjoyable experience when you have a stack of books that are waiting to be reviewed and you just want to get lost in a book and not think about character development, plot elements, and dialogue. I'm not saying I don't ever get lost in the books that I review, because many times I do. But sometimes I just want to set it all aside and reread an old favorite, some nonfiction, or some NY Times Bestseller that doesn't fit in with the kinds of books I generally review.

Enter the JUST FOR FUN Reading Challenge on Goodreads. Goodreads is a site to keep track of all the books you have ever read, want to read, and didn't even know existed. It's a place to connect with other book lovers and discover what books you have in common and how you each interpreted a particular story. Until January 31 anyone can join the JUST FOR FUN Reading Challenge which is moderated by Lori. It's not a huge challenge, just a challenge to read one book per month purely for enjoyment. And there is also the opportunity to win some great prizes throughout the year.

Southern Humboldt School District needs your help

Dear State Senator Evans,

Dear California State Assemblyman Wesley Chesbro,

Dear Governor Edmund G. Brown

I am writing to object to the targeting of the students in rural California for disproportionate cuts because state revenues are significantly less than anticipated in the adopted 2011-12 State Budget. The State Budget trigger will cut all Home-to-School and Special Education Transportation funding from January 1, 2012 through June 30, 2012. 90% of the students in the Southern Humboldt Unified School District require Home-to-School Transportation. Most of the families are unable to provide transportation for their children to go to school. Many of the District’s families are low-income, many are single-parent or two-parent families who are working. They do not have the funds or the time to provide transportation services.

Additionally, many of the students in the Southern Humboldt Unified School District live more than a mile from the school campus, while most live more than 30 miles from school. There are no sidewalks, no regional transportation, and no bicycle lanes along the rural roads; there are no other options available for the students to transport themselves to school. The elimination of Home-to-School and Special Education Transportation funds would endanger student safety going to and from school.

For these reasons, I am writing to urge you to reverse the targeted Home-to-School and Special Education Transportation cuts that are part of the State Budget enacted on June 30, 2011. If this is impossible; I am further asking you to at least reconsider this decision to all rural school districts. The across the board cut is detrimental to rural communities and it seems constitutionally unfair where a majority of students within the district are cut off from attaining an education. Please consider a decision that is fair for every student.

Thank you for your consideration of this critical matter.

12 months of Christmas...Coming soon!

In an effort to be better prepared for Christmas 2012, I have decided to work on ornaments and gifts throughout the year. The reason I have decided to announce this goal to the world is to keep myself on track. If I have readers following my progress - I'm hoping - that it will prompt me to stay on task throughout the year. I haven't got all the details nailed down, but I think I have a few ideas settled already. I found the ideas for some of these ornaments on Pinterest.com.

February: Angels This hilarious angel ornament made from a tampon comes from Fave Crafts, possibly the cutest pasta angel I've ever seen from Craftily Ever After, and again, one I'm working on designing.

March: Stars This simple paper star comes from Good Housekeeping, this German paper star (we made these in my 7th grade class and I'm German, so these are a must) is from With a Grateful Prayer and a Thankful Heart, and a variation of this glittery star from The Robin and the Sparrow.

Review and Giveaway: 'Night of the Living Dead Christian' by Matt Mikalatos

I'm sure all of my readers would love to own a copy of Night of the Living Dead Christian by Matt Mikalatos, and one lucky reader will own it if they are chosen in the giveaway. But, I will get to the giveaway details after the review.

Matt Mikalatos is also the author of Imaginary Jesus, which won rave reviews from professional critics and everyday readers alike. Although I haven't read Imaginary Jesus, I was excited to be able to have the opportunity to review - and give a copy away thanks to Tyndale House Publishers - Night of the Living Dead Christian (NOTLDC).

NOTLDC is the story of an average neighborhood that is being overrun by zombies, werewolves, and vampires. The main character, Matt, is introduced when he is out taking his nightly walk as Chief Officer of the Neighborhood Watch program. He meets a mad scientist (er, eccentric genius) named Dr. Culbetron and his robot HIBBS 3000 just as they are about to test a new invention. When it is tested, hundreds of zombies show up, determined to get at Matt and Dr. Culbetron. The story continues as Matt, the doctor, and the robot encounter a vampire Matt went to high school with and a werewolf who lives down the street. It becomes the mission of all five to cure the werewolf and the vampire of their monster tendencies without becoming zombies in the process.

This is a hilarious story that had me laughing out loud several times at the characters' antics. When the werewolf is introduced, the reader learns his name is Luther Martin. His father is a Lutheran pastor and is almost fanatical about the influence reformer Martin Luther had on the modern church. As a result, the poor werewolf's name is Luther Ann Martin.

The funniest character, however, is Matt. His delusions of self-grandeur aside, he is quite witty and incredibly perceptive. In a review for Imaginary Jesus, the DC Christian Fiction Examiner had this to say about author Matt Mikalatos:

If Mikalatos’s wry wit doesn’t pull you into the book within a couple pages, his action-packed chase of imaginary Jesus will soon have you flipping pages. But be warned. Beneath the excitement of the adventurous chase and the humor of his comic wit, Mikalatos packs some heavy, biblical punches

This reader whole-heartedly agrees that the author has created a novel that is just as compelling with NOTLDC. While laughing at the situations the characters find themselves in, the reader is confronted with their own beliefs about what real Christianity looks like. Is it blind devotion to a particular religious leader that only allows followers to use one translation of the Bible, certain songs at worship, and certain styles of dress? Those are zombies. What about those that feel they are never really forgiven and their sinful man must be 'killed' again and again, having a stake driven through their heart on an almost daily basis? Vampires! And what about those that just can't seem to control their animalistic tendencies to hurt and tear apart those they love? The ones that try to fix themselves through therapies, church attendance, and any other means possible? Werewolves!

In the end, all the characters make some kind of change and the truth of Christianity and Christ's love is revealed. Mikalatos has been called the 21st century's C.S. Lewis because he exposes the hypocrisy of the modern church. His style has been called a cross between Monty Python and C.S. Lewis. Whatever words are used to describe author Matt Mikalatos, one thing is certain. He has a long writing career ahead of him and this reader wants to devour everything he writes.

Ferndale vs. Fortuna in High School Football Championship

Ferndale takes the field; victorious over Willits.

Ferndale Wildcats, my son's high school alma mater, won a championship football game yesterday against the Willits Wolverines. (That's my son in the lower left corner.) On Friday night, my high school alma mater, the Fortuna Huskies won their championship game against Berean Christian. So that means that Ferndale and Fortuna will be playing against each other, AGAIN, next week.

Read this article for some background on the rivalry between Fortuna and Ferndale.

Now given the vitriolic comments that were left on my Facebook page when I commented about the rivalry mentioned in the article above, what happens at this championship game OFF the field will be anyone's guess. However, I want to go on the record NOW as stating the following:

I never said, nor suspected that the students guilty of taking the Milk Can were members of the Fortuna High football team.
I have the utmost respect for Coach Mike Benbow and the other members of the coaching staff at Fortuna High. I attended Fortuna High with Coach Benbow and have always known him to be fair, honest, and a tough but likable coach.
I WILL be wearing Wildcat Red at the football game and I will cheer loudly for the 'Cats.
I will NOT engage in arguments OFF the field with other parents/fans.

If you can make it to this historical play-off game between Ferndale and Fortuna, I encourage you to attend. It should be a tough game and when the final whistle blows, both teams will be able to say they played their hardest.

Thanksgiving Thoughts About Family

Thanksgiving is almost here. As families gather and join together to eat and share memories and make new ones, I'm thinking about people that are no longer in my life. So often we go about our busy schedules, working, cleaning, shopping, just the hustle and bustle of living and we forget to appreciate those around us until it's too late and they are no longer with us.

Thanksgiving, when I was a kid, was a huge affair. My paternal grandparents had six children that survived to adulthood that then started families of their own and everyone got together at Thanksgiving and Christmas. As a child, these were glorious times of Aunty Mary's Baked Beans, Uncle Ed's Buttermilk Pancakes, and laughter, games, and cozy laps. By the time I was in junior high, these gatherings had gotten smaller. Nana and Papa came to our house on Thanksgiving and the rest of the relatives would stop by throughout the day to share dessert, chat, and play board games. Nana and Papa, my dad's parents, are both gone now and for some reason, I'm especially missing them and some other family members this year.

Nana was the oldest sister in a family of three girls. Her name was Leola and her younger sisters were Virginia (Aunt Ginny) and Lynn (Aunt Lynn). Her mother died shortly after Lynn was born, so it was up to her to be the influential female in the house. Pictures of my Nana when she was younger still have the power to silence me and take me back to a time when women were ladies. She was stunning on her wedding day in August 1929. She was 18.

Papa was the youngest in his family. His name was Henry and his siblings were Alma, Emil, Ernest, Emma, and George. (And I feel like I'm forgetting someone!) He was devastatingly handsome with his red hair combed straight back, as was the style at the dawn of a new decade. He was 20 when he married Leola.

They soon were the parents to four girls, Margaret, Henrietta, Mary Ann, and Jeannette. One month before their first son and my dad John was born, Henrietta died at the age of 8. There is one picture that exists of Henrietta and she is an adorable tom boy of a girl with short dark hair and dancing eyes. I would have liked to see the woman she became, but GOD needed her more. After my dad was born in 1940, two more children were added to the family, Clara and James.

By the time I was born in 1967, I already had 10 older cousins, but I was to be the only baby in the family for nearly four years until a brother and another female cousin were born. Then more siblings and cousins were added to my family. As our family grew, so did the bonds that connect me to these people. Aunty Marg, my dad's oldest sister, was like a second mom to me and she doted on me because she had two sons and no daughters. We were incredibly close as I grew up and she would sew her own house dresses, always making sure to make a tiny version so we could match.

Aunty Jeannette lived far away with Uncle Pete and their two girls, Sandra and Tina, and later on, their son Shane. We would visit them wherever Uncle Pete was pastoring a church and I always had so much fun. I remember visiting Hanford, California and swimming in a backyard pool. When we visited them in the Mojave Desert we visited Red Rock Canyon, the ghost town of Calico, and played with red ants in the front yard.

Aunty Mary and Uncle Melvin provided me with my first playmates and closest childhood friends. There were three girls (Leola, Margaret, or Markie, and Doris) and three boys (Bill, Stan, and Edward) in this family. I was closest to the two youngest girls, Markie and Doris, and we spent hours playing games outside and board games inside. The stories we could tell!

Aunty Clara was the silly aunt that never grew up and we could all count on her to give us the candy and toys our parents didn't really want us to have. (Some things never change!) She was married to Uncle Bill and they would follow the fruit crops in Oregon, sending me letters of their adventures. Uncle Bill had tattoos! He smoked! He looked like Waylon Jennings! And I thought he was the coolest man around, next to my dad.

Uncle James is the only brother my dad has. He lives in Oregon with his wife Donna. They had three kids when I was younger; Mitzi and her two brothers Jamie and Jereme. They have since adopted three other children, but we rarely see them. I am closest to Mitzi of these children. And she and I used to be so much closer even though she only lives a half hour away from me. I miss her.

Of these family members, Nana was the first to die. She went to be with Jesus, carried in to heaven by thousands of angels in May of 1987. I had no idea how much she meant to me, truly meant to me, until I became a mother myself and realized the influence she had on my life. She was the strongest woman I have ever known and though she could be harsh at times, she loved fiercely and had a faith that moved mountains.

Our family was so blessed, we didn't lose another family member until my Papa died on August 30, 2005. He was 96 and though I wish I could still sit and listen to him tell stories of long ago, I wouldn't trade the experience of being with him as he drew some of his last breaths. Talking about seeing my Nana, his beautiful bride, as he passed from this life to the next is something I will cherish for as long as I live.

Since Papa joined Nana in heaven, Uncle Bill has joined them. He confessed Jesus as his savior at the end and that is a blessing indeed. Aunty Marg is now reunited with her parents, and her dear sister. Uncle Melvin has also made his way to heaven and I'm sure they are all having a grand time walking the streets of gold, talking with their loved ones that went on before, and sitting at the feet of Jesus.

It's thought-provoking to be my age. I feel more confident and self-assured than I did in my 20's and 30's, but I also see the people I looked up to and those that I turned to for guidance reaching ages when they are losing some of their independence and self-assuredness. It's sad at times. And yet, I have so much to be thankful for. I am the person I am today because of the influence of each and every one of my family members. I hope that those younger than me; the second and third cousins, the nieces and nephews, will realize that family truly is a gift from GOD and not something to be squandered or divided by situations and words that just steal the joy of one another's company.

What I'm reading now: 'Wings' by Aprilynne Pike

I can't believe it, but it's been nearly a month since the Humboldt County Author Festival and I got the chance to meet 25 children's fiction authors and illustrators. And I didn't just get to meet them. I got to talk to them and have them sign books for me; some for myself and some as gifts.

I finally dug into the tote bag full of books last night and pulled out Wings by Aprilynne Pike. To be honest, this isn't really a book I had planned on reading (I'm not much into teen fantasy), but when I met the author she was so stinkin' cute and charming, I couldn't help but want to read what she had written.

I'm so glad I picked this book! For one thing, it's set in my neck of the woods, northern California. So far north we are closer to Oregon than we are to San Francisco. We are right on the coast in the heart of redwood country and though the book is set in Del Norte county, I totally recognize all the places that are mentioned in the book.

I'm about a quarter of the way through this story about a girl named Laurel who moves to Crescent City from Orick. She has been homeschooled all her life, but now that she is 15 her parents feel it's time for her to attend high school. She doesn't really want to, but she makes the best of it. She becomes friends with some kids, mainly a boy named David and a girl named Chelsea. She has never felt like other kids and now something is growing in the middle of her back! Her mom says it's a zit, but it's getting bigger and it is not going away!

I don't want to share much more because I don't want to give away the story, but I'm so loving it! This author has done a great job of capturing the friendship between high school kids, in a good way. It's refreshing to read a young adult novel that isn't filled with curse words and risky behavior. Granted I haven't read the whole thing, but I would be totally surprised if the author's tone just changes all of a sudden.

Each devotion includes fascinating information and facts about an animal, a short Bible story, a memory verse, and questions for children to ponder and answer.

For example, the lionfish is included in the devotion titled Deadly Beauty. This beautiful, yet dangerous sea creature reminds us that even though the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden looked delicious and appetizing, it was forbidden for a reason. Anyone who even touched it would surely die. Other animals found in this children's devotion book include the caterpillar, the goat, the Northern Goshawk, the gibbon, and the turtle.

Such Biblical and moral values taught include honesty, perseverance, and faith. The resurrection of God's believers and His daily protection are also explored in language that children can understand without being oversimplified.

The last devotion in the book doesn't use an animal as its object lesson at all; is uses a bean seed. Just like the bean plant grows lusher, taller, and stronger the further its roots grow into the nourishing soil, so do children and adults when the make studying God's Word and Biblical principles a daily habit.

'Once Upon A Time' brings fairy tales to the small screen

Are you obsessed with fairy tales? Does a good yarn get you going? Do you believe that good always wins and that evil is always punished? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, I suggest you check out the new drama on ABC, called Once Upon A Time.

The premise of this program is quite simple. As everyone knows, the evil queen tried to kill Snow White and was unsuccessful. Snow White was awakened by Prince Charming and they were supposed to live happily ever after. But...

When the evil queen discovered that Snow White and Prince Charming were about to be married she placed one final curse on them. At some point in the future, they and the rest of the fairy tale kingdom would be cursed to live in modern times trapped in a town called Storybrooke. The worst part of the curse? None of them would remember who they really are or anything about the past.

There is only one person who can break the spell and return the kingdom to its former glory; Emma Swan. And who is Emma Swan? She is the child of Snow White and Prince Charming who was miraculously saved as an infant from the evil queen's curse. She grew up in modern times as a foster child. At some point she had a baby boy who she placed for adoption. She has no knowledge of who she is or that she is the one meant to free the fairy tale kingdom.

But, after three episodes, (it airs on ABC at 8 p.m. on Sunday) Emma is definitely involved with the residents of Storybrooke, who are really fairly tale characters. She was brought there by the mayor/evil queen's son, Henry. Why? Because Henry is the little boy she gave up for adoption nearly a decade ago.

It's interesting to see the story unfold each week as the action moves back and forth between the fairytale kingdom and modern times. Without even mentioning who they were in the fairy tale kingdom, it's easy to see who some characters are. Little Red Riding Hood has been transformed into Ruby, a sexy barely-adult young woman who constantly grumbles at Granny's attempts to rein her in. Granny runs a cafe. Mr. Gold - who owns everything in town - was Rumpelstiltskin in his former life and the hunstman who saved Snow White's life is now the sheriff. Jiminy Cricket? He's a child psychologist.

In the most recent episode, viewers got to see how Prince Charming, whose first name is James, and Snow White first met. Viewers also saw Henry's attempts at bringing school teacher Mary Margaret (Snow White) and a comatose John Doe (Prince Charming) together. The fireworks between Emma, Henry's birth mother and Regina, his adopted mother (the town's mayor/evil queen) are fantastic. Mary Margaret/Snow White is perfectly played by the adorable Ginnifer Goodwin.

Those that have missed the beginning episodes of this amazing new twist on fairy tales can get up to speed by watching full episodes of Once Upon A Time for free at ABC's website. The next episode, which airs on Sunday, November 13 at 8 p.m. Pacific Time is titled The Price of Gold.

Thomas Jefferson's Bible to be exhibited at National Museum of American History (NMAH)

It's so interesting how the liberal media and those that believe them like to tell Conservatives that the Founding Fathers weren't Christian/didn't read the Bible, etc. Just yesterday while reading the lastest issue of Vanity Fair (hey, Johnny Depp is on the cover!) I ran across an article about how the Tea Party is destroying everything the Revolutionists accomplished. While I didn't read the article yet, I'm sure it says something similar to the denial of the Constitutional framers having any acknowledgement of God. Which brings me to Jefferson's Bible.

Yes, Thomas Jefferson. The man who was a president of the United States twice, the man who helped write the Constitution of the United States, the man who is often called one of the Founding Fathers had a Bible. And he read it every night. According to the October 2011 issue of Smithsonian magazine, Jefferson cut scriptures from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and created a narrative of the life of Christ. He called it The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazereth. Although Jefferson is quoted as saying,

"I not only write nothing on religion, but rarely permit myself to speak on it,"

it does not mean he didn't submit to a higher power. This Bible, created by Jefferson, was something that he told only his closest friends about, but he admitted to reading it before retiring for the night every night.

This Bible was acquired by the Smithsonian in 1895. Now it has been painstakingly restored and will be exhibited to the public beginning November 11, 2011 through May 28, 2012. It will be on display at the National Museum of American History's Small Documents Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Hmmm.....so NONE of the Founding Fathers placed ANY importance on the Scriptures and a moral lifestyle? Interesting.

For those that know me well, you know exactly how I feel about Halloween. I'm not here to debate that issue at this time. I am here to state the simple fact that I don't celebrate Halloween, although I did in the past. I have come to hate the holiday and everything it represents, as it is so far from what it was when I was a kid, it's barely recognizable anymore. Anyway....

I DO, however, LOVE Autumn. This is a somewhat new revelation to me. Summer has always been, and still is, my favorite season. But I love the smells, colors, and feel of those crisp Autumn mornings and the taste of hot apple cider in the afternoon on a gloomy day. So how do I celebrate the season? Reading, of course! That's not all, but it is one of my favorite past times.

Can't believe it's been nearly a year since I've posted ANYTHING on this here little blog. I don't even know what I should do with it, since I never write here anymore. I'm so consumed with life and making my thoughts known in another forum, that Tallysplace has fallen by the wayside.

Do I even have followers and readers anymore?!?

I'm thankful for having written here and getting my feet wet in the internet publishing world (is that the right terminology?) But, maybe I should come here more often and write down my feelings, thoughts, and opinions of life and the world around me.

Someone that used to be a friend recently contacted me through a friend of a friend of a friend (how many friends IS that?) and asked that I remove a post in which there were a few pictures of her teenage daughter. Mind you, we were friends when this post was written, permission was given, and she was shown with some other teen girls in our church. Nothing inappropriate. Now, nearly 2 years later, she decides she doesn't want pictures of her daughter on the internet. Fine, I can understand that. But 2 YEARS LATER? And she wants me to remove the whole post. Nope, just removed any pictures and references to her daughter.

If you happen to see this post and even read anything from Tallysplace anymore, could you comment and let me know your thoughts? Do I have time for this blogging thing?

A New Blog to Brag About

Hi all! It feels like centuries since I've been here at this blog and I must say I have missed you all. I've been working hard to get the word out about my paying gig over at Examiner.com and while things are better, they aren't where I want them to be. I'm coming to you - my blog friends - to ask for help.

I write three columns at Examiner.com. One focuses on the world of Christian fiction. That includes book reviews, author interviews, upcoming releases, author events, etc. Right now in that column I have a slew of author interviews coming out.

The second column I write has to do with recycling, repurposing, reusing, green living. This column covers DIY projects, recycling events, green fashion shows, etc.

The third column covers children's fiction. This column is similar to the Christian fiction column, but the focus is on books for kids. At the beginning of October I compiled a list, with the help of readers, of the 365 best children's books and I will be reviewing each and every one of them over the course of a year. I have started a blog specifically for those book reviews.

Since about May, I have been almost non-existent in the blogging world. I am so afraid to look in my reader as I haven't been there in months either. It makes me twitch to think of all those great articles just waiting to be read. So.... I just don't go there in hopes that it will go away,even thought I know it won't. So, what HAVE I been doing?!?

Here, for your perusal is where I have been spending my time and working my fingers to the bone. Ha! I found a way to be able to go on and on about subjects I love and get paid for it. I found a site, Examiner.com, it's an online news site, each major city, and some smaller ones, each have their own editions. I write for San Francisco/northern California. My absolute favoritist holiday ever to celebrate is Independence Day. Don't get me wrong, Christmas and Resurrection Sunday are at the top of the list for remembering my Savior and what He has done for me. But 4th of July? Bring on the sun, the lemonade, and the fireworks!

In honor of the upcoming holiday next month, I thought I'd share some craft ideas I have found. I want to do all of these, but....well, we will see. Let me know if you try any of them. I love to see pictures!

Sunshine....Yeah!

Yeah the sun is shining.! After a week of wind and rain (yes, in JUNE), it is a beautifully glorious day. The window is open letting fresh air in, the crows are outside arguing, and the annoying I scream-from-5 am-til-midnight kids that live behind us are currently silent.

We have the possibility of a move to the next town 10 miles away and that would be a huge blessing. A yard, a garage, a yard, peace and quiet, and a yard. Did I mention we would have a yard? Front and back? Wow! Green stuff that grows out of the ground and you can actually walk on bare-footed and you don't have to sweep. Although you have to mow and water, such an improvement over cement for the last 3 years.

It's near the city bus system, not too far from town, and close enough to my bestie, Starla that I can walk over to her place. Yipppeeee! Another perk? Being in the same town as my grand baby. Who recently turned 1! And who is walking and jabbering all over the place and destroying the house from one end to the other.

I don't want to get my hopes up. I do want what GOD wants for me, even if that means NOT moving right now. But....I can pray and hope, right?

In other news, I may have already said this ages ago, I can't remember and I'm too lazy to look, I am a "writer" for examiner.com. Examiner.com is an online newspaper, so to speak. They have regional links for the entire United States. I'm currently writing for the San Francisco/northern California edition. I write about Christian fiction. Book reviews, author interviews, new releases, author appearances, that sort of thing. I would love if you would hope on over and take a look at what I've written. If you love Christian fiction, or fiction in general, this is the place to keep up on all the latest stuff. I recently interviewed Francine Rivers, author of countless books including Redeeming Love and her newest, Her Mother's Hope.

I have also been so busy with lots of church activities. AWANA is on a summer break, but I recently took over directing our Children's Church program. I'm still involved with Ruth's Room and we recently sent a care package to Pago Pago. I will be teaching 5th and 6th graders at this year's VBS program and the women of the church are undertaking a mentoring program for our older teen and young adult women. Add to that the fact that the church started a garden, we have a weekly craft night available, and I'm also responsible for keeping the church kitchen supplied and in working order. Whew! No wonder I'm so busy.

Well, off for now. Maybe I will have a craft or two to post in the near future. Till then....lalalalalalalala...the sun is shining!!!

God's Timing

I feel guilty. I have been away from here for so long and I feel like I have neglected cherished friends. God has really been at work in my life. I have been unemployed since the beginning of December. I was denied unemployment, even on appeal. Then my income tax refund was withheld because of my husband owing back child support.

I'm not complaining. I have looked for work, etc. but there is nothing or God has not opened the doors yet. God is breaking me down, remolding me. Teaching me to trust in Him entirely. And it's scary sometimes. But I will not compronise. I will not give in or give up. I just may be absent from here. Please keep me in your prayers.

Is Your Man "Wild at Heart?'

I just finished reading Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of A Man's Soul by John Eldredge. The back cover of the book reads,

Every man was once a boy. And every little boy has dreams, big dreams: dreams of being the hero, of beating the bad guys, of doing daring feats and rescuing the damsel in distress. Every little girl has dreams, too: of being rescued by her prince and swept up into a great adventure, knowing that she is the beauty.
But what happens to those dreams when we grow up? Walk into most churches, have a look around, and ask yourself: What is a Christian man? Without listening to what is said, look at what you find there. Most Christian men are...bored.
In Wild at Heart, John Eldredge invites men to recover their masculine heart, defined in the image of a passionate God. And he invites women to discover the secret of a man's soul and to delight in the strength and wildness men are created to offer.

When I read that back cover I thought, "Oh boy, another man thinking every woman wants and needs to be rescued." But the more I read, the more the points the author talked about made sense to me.

According to Eldredge, if man is created in God's image, and if God created this wild world, and if God gave man the authority and desire to have dominion over the natural world, then why do we, as a society, spend our time telling our little boys, "Don't climb on that?" "Stay out of the mud?" "Quit running!"

Women are also created in God's image. We know that God created men and women to be different. Women and men display different attributes of God. For the most part, women are created to display the nurturing, compassionate, tender attributes of God. But society teaches girls that they must be pretty to attract attention, but "they don't need that attention." "Women can do anything men can do." "Females don't need rescuing."

Women may not need to be rescued, but sometimes we like to feel like our husband would rescue us if it were required. Sometimes our husbands want to feel like they are the conquering hero that we adore. What does all of this have to do with God and being the person God wants you to be?

Ultimately it comes down to this, if we deny the very nature that God created us with (not the sinful nature) then how can we fully live out the life God has for us? Eldredge says every man has three desires. Those desires are:

a battle to fight
and adventure to live
a beauty to rescue

In the 250+ pages that follow the introduction, the author provides anecdotes and scripture to make his points. The chapters were just the right length, and the concepts were easy to understand. I especially liked how the author related the points he was trying to make to himself and the spiritual journey of his own life. My favorite chapter was titled "A Beauty to Rescue."

Whether women will admit it or not, at some point in their childhood, they played princess. We wanted to be the beauty in the story that a hero would come and rescue from the terrible situation we somehow found ourselves in. As we grew up, some of us began to believe this was only a fairy tale. Some waited patiently until all hope was lost. There is only one man who is the Ultimate Rescuer...Jesus. He rescues every single woman (and man) from the death brought by sin. But here on earth, God designed marriage and when the man is the warrior, lover, rescuer and the woman is the maiden, lover, encourager, the fairy tale does come true.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! I recommend that couples read it together or at least both read it. It has allowed me to recognize and understand some of the behaviors of my own husband and allowed me to cherish him even more for them. Also, I don't like to be vulnerable. I don't want anyone to think I'm weak or "can't handle it." I'm not fooling anyone and I honor my husband by letting him be my earthly protector.

Celebrities...The Nice Ones

Living here in Northern California, (waaaaaaaaaay north, like five hours north of San Francisco and 2 hours south of the Oregon border) I don't run into celebrities too often. If I travel out of the area, maybe once in a while I might see someone famous from afar. And if I go to a concert or something, I'm in the nosebleed section because that's all I can afford. But, I decided the ones I have met face to face and conversed with - even if it was only through Facebook or email - are really nice. They are real people, just like you and me. They have to drive their kids to school. They get the flu and poison oak just like we do. So, in order to let you know who I'm talking about, here is a brief synopsis of my latest "famous people" encounters.

~Barbara T. Marshall This absolutely gorgeous-inside-and-out lady recently spoke at the North Coast Baptist Association's Women's Conference. It just happened to be held at the church I attend. Barbara is the President and Founder of Thriving in Christ Ministries and the author of RANSOMED... Loving yourself from the inside out. She travels internationally to speak and give seminars. It just so happens that Barbara is married to the brother of a local Baptist Christian woman. Barbara shared stories about herself that weren't too pretty. But they were stories that other women can relate to. After the conference I got a chance to talk to Barbara and discovered that we each have an oldest child that is not in the best relationship and that there are grandchildren involved. Barbara agreed to lift my daughter up in prayer and I agreed to lift hers up. She also took the time to talk to one of the youth girls in our church. She wasn't stand-offish just because she in an international traveler and speaker. She didn't talk incessantly about her book and how it would change our lives if we bought it. She is a real sister in Christ.

~Robert Elmer This author of over 50 books recently released the historical novel Wildflowers of Terezin. I contacted him and asked if I could interview him about this newest release, thinking I might hear from him in a month or two, if at all. Imagine my surprise when I sat down to check my email a couple of mornings later and had a reply from him. An honest to goodness, he-typed-it-himself response. I sent him some questions and he quickly responded with funny and honest answers. He's one cool dude. My Summer Wish List

Is it too early to start making plans for the summer? Not necessarily places I want to go or things I want to see, but all the things I want to accomplish this summer. Well, I decided I needed some accountability, so I'm setting forth a partial list of things I want to accomplish before fall rolls around. If I get started now, I will have more time for enjoying the sun, some sweet tea, and the company of a good book. In no particular order, here is the list.

Make this Little Black Dress I posted about back in February
Make about a dozen Brags and get them out to Hurricane Rojo
Clean and organize my craft room once and for all
Bust out the serious crafts I want to make and market the rootitoottoot out of 'em
Clean all the closets and get rid of all the "stuff" I truly don't need
Spend some quality time with my kids this summer doing all the things we used to do
Can and bake the way I used to do
Finish all the books on my bedside table
Go camping
Hang at the beach for the day

Are You a Fan of Sarah?

Which Sarah am I talking about?

Sara Bareilles? The musical one from MY COUNTY that wrote and performed Love Song? Nope...not that one, even though I am a fan.

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York and the original Fergie? Nope...I like her and I think she got a raw deal from the Royal Family, but it's not her I am referring to either.

How about Sarah Jessica Parker? Definitely not...I liked her when she was in Square Pegs, but since then, nope.

Have you figured out which Sarah I'm referring to? If you haven't guessed Sarah Palin by now, I just don't know what to say.

You say the name "Sarah Palin" and you get some really strong reactions. Some people think she is a total nut job and they just wish she would go away. Others adore her and think she is the next best thing since sliced bread. Me? I lean towards the next-best-thing thing, but let me explain.

Here are the reasons I like her;

She is a strong Christian woman.
She speaks her mind.
She is intelligent and knows what she is talking about.
She exposed the crooks in both parties.
She put the people of Wasilla (as mayor) and Alaska (as governor) first.
She is not afraid to be honest and mingle with the "common" folk.
She admits that she makes mistakes.

Now, those are some pretty general reasons. However, I wasn't so sure about her the first time I heard her name. I was driving home from work and I heard on the radio that John McCain had chosen a woman as his running mate. The first thought I had was, "He just sealed his fate. There is no way he can win now." And I truly believed this. Even though we have come a long way since Geraldine Ferraro ran as the Vice Presidential candidate with Walter Mondale, I still believe that our country doesn't value the strengths some women have. But I went home, and began listening to Sarah Palin give speeches. I was impressed. I watched the interviews and the way the liberal media bashed her; mostly because she didn't play ball with the good ol' boys and because she was normal. I mean, seriously, as a middle America, stay-at-home soccer mom, who would you rather have in the White House? Someone like Sarah Palin or a career politician like Joe Biden?

And the more I watched how Sarah Palin handled herself and I read and heard the things she was saying, I began to believe that she was really the person she was portraying. She wasn't faking to get elected. She wasn't playing the political game. I was really disappointed when the election results came in. I truly supported John McCain and Sarah Palin and I was saddened to see our country elect someone who didn't have as much experience as Sarah Palin (as the V.P. candidate) did as the actual Presidential candidate.

I just finished Sarah Palin's book Going Rogue. I don't know if I have ever read another autobiography. If I have, it must not have left a very big impression on me. I learned more about the political process. I learned more about Alaska and the fiercely independent spirit of the people that live there. I learned that when it comes down to it, Sarah is just a regular mom who is committed to doing her best and raising her children to be good citizens.

Even if you don't particularly like Sarah Palin or the world of politics bore you, try her book. You might just be surprised. Oh...and in case you are wondering; yes, I'm a fan of Sarah.

I Want Chickens!

Am I the only one to have noticed a resurgence in keeping chickens lately? Surely not, because when I got my latest issue of Organic Gardening, this was on the cover.

Isn't that one of the most beautiful chickens you have ever seen? That is none other than Heidi, an Appenzeller Spitzhauben pullet. I think she has a chance at becoming America's Next Top Chicken Super Model.

All kidding aside, I love chickens. Back when my babies were still babies, we lived on an acre and a half. We had pigs, ducks, a rabbit, cats, a dog, a couple of steers, and chickens. Oh, I was happy as a hog rolling in mud. I couldn't have asked for a better start to life for my children. To see them tossing scratch to the chickens, feeding table scraps to the pigs, and the best, to see their pudgy little hands carefully bringing an egg into the kitchen. The look on their faces - bliss.

I mean how can you resist finding eggs like this in the nest? Knowing that it's fresh, wholesome, and plain old good for ya? Not me. When we first started out, I think we got about six chicks. One ended up being a rooster. So you know what that means....eventually you get more chickens. We started selling our eggs. I can't believe that I was selling my fresh eggs for $1.25 a dozen and making a profit. Times sure have changed.

As I read the Organic Gardening article, it took me back to the days when I would have Rhode Island Reds following me around the place. Such a pretty and calm chicken.

This momma Buff Orpington and her chicks remind me of my favorite hen of all, though. Matilda was so gentle and almost like a pet. She would be the first one to greet me at the gate every morning.

The magazine article reignited my love for chickens. My desire to hear them clucking first thing in the morning and cooing softly as they settled themselves for the night. Reaching under a fat hen to get an egg for breakfast or to make a cake from scratch is one of life's simplest pleasures. Alas, I live in an apartment with no yard. And when I say no yard, I mean no grass, nothin'! Oh... I long for the day when I can have a couple hens and even a rooster to call my own.

Maybe when I do get chickens, I'll head over to HenSpa.com or EZ Clean Coops and pick up a top-of-the-line chicken coop. Or maybe I'll just build me a Red Neck one.

What Has Happened to My Life?

When you are a kid, you think summers last all year long. You think that when they tell you to come in when it gets dark that you have hours and hours before you have to go in. And you think that when grown-ups tell you that time flies the older they get that they have no idea what they are talking about.

FLASH FOWARD!

I'm the grown-up and time flies faster and faster every year. Who am I kidding? Every day! I remember when I had first quit my job in December and was trying to make ends meet that i was busy as I crafted, attended shows, and blogged. Hahahaha....and a great big HA! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MY LIFE?!?

I have less time now than I did when I was working. I have waaaaay more blogs that I follow and still no time to read them, much less comment. I have no idea where the time between Christmas and almost summer went, but Whoa! SLOW DOWN! I can't see anything as time goes whizzing by me with so many things I am missing.

I know what my parents were talking about. My cousin, who I grew up with and played Clue and Monopoly and Life with...just turned 50! Are you kidding me? That means I'm getting old! How did this happen? What? My ears are getting bad.

Did you say "Life is What Happens While You Are Busy Making Plans?"

Yep...that's what I thought you said.

Summer 1984 or How I Met My Husband

I have to start this post by saying that I don't have a scanner and because I don't have a scanner, there is no way I can show you pictures that relate to the story I am about to tell. Rest assured, someday I will be able to post those necessary pictures. For the mean time you will have to trust me that I looked totally hot in the 80's (big hair and all) and so did the other person in this story, BunBun. Also... this is a very long post.

It was nearing the beginning of the summer in 1984. I would be a senior in the fall and then after that....off to college. My brother, who is 3 1/2 years younger than me, was ending up his Babe Ruth baseball season. For some reason, I don't know if it was boredom or what, but I went to one of his games. (Not something I normally did because I had an afternoon and weekend job at Heidi's Bakery.) As I watched his game, I noticed a really cute guy on his team. I must have asked him about this guy. I soon was going to all of his games, what few there were left to play. My dad was also an assistant coach and had a list of all the players names and phone numbers. Between going to the games and flirting with this guy and having his number already....well, I did what my mom said girls shouldn't do; I called him.

Baseball season ended and summer began. I was busy hanging out with friends and working. Going camping and planning how cool my senior year in high school would be. And I was still talking to the this guy on the phone. Only he was calling me too. And he kept asking me to be his girlfriend. And I kept saying no. I didn't want to say no. I wanted to say YES! But I didn't. I kept saying no because he was only going to be a FRESHMAN and I was going to be a SENIOR. And my best friend kept telling me how dumb I would be to have a boyfriend who was only a FRESHMAN. She kept telling me that everyone would tease me and think I was like, totally not cool, ya' know? So I kept saying no.

So school started and I saw this guy EVERY DAY at school. We didn't live in the same town so school was the only place we saw each other. And we were still talking on the phone every night. Even though he was going out with the little sister of my best friend. The friend that said I should NOT go out with him because he was too young. Then one day they broke up. And then the next day we were walking towards each other between classes. And then I was walking up to him and KISSED HIM! And kept walking to my locker!

Yeah...we were boyfriend and girlfriend after that. We fought. We made up. We fought. We made up. He taught me how to ride a dirt bike. He made me BLTs without the L. He worked mornings before school milking cows and setting irrigation pipes so he could buy me a ring for Christmas. He let me wear his favorite flannel shirt and his big brother's old football jersey. We spent every weekend together either at my house or his house. We talked on the phone every night. His dad, Carl, let us sit in the front seat (bucket seat) together, when Carl would drive me home. We were in love and we planned our future.

But then the end of my senior year came. Friends told me I should break up with him. We were fighting more as I talked about going to college and he felt he was getting left behind. One thing led to another and I broke up with him a week before graduation. It was the most terrible feeling I had ever experienced. What should have been a fun-filled week of activities was overshadowed with sadness and stupid high school antics. On the night of my graduation, he was there with his mom. After the ceremony he kissed me and begged me to take him back. I was so dumb as I pushed him away and ran off with my friends.

As summer began again we both did stupid things. My best friend and his best friend were now a couple and it made life difficult. I avoided him completely. When I did have to see him I was mean. Why? Because I could be. Somehow, the friend who had told me to break up with him in the first place convinced me to get back together with him. So I did. And it was like we had never been apart. But things were different. I was a "grown-up" now. I had just turned 18 and I was getting ready to move out on my own. I had just started classes at the community college. And I was working a lot more. He was a sophomore in high school and he hated being there when I wasn't. So he cut classes. He hung out with the wrong crowd. And he did something else.

I went to meet him for lunch one day at the high school. While I was waiting for him, this girl (not a nice girl) came up to me and asked me why I was waiting for her boyfriend. What was she talking about? He didn't have time to be with this girl and why would he? She was nasty and everyone knew it. As he walked out and saw me, he smiled. Then he saw her. AWKWARD. He walked off with me and I began to question him about her. What was she talking about? We argued; that's really all I remember. I know I was living on my own then and he came home with me. I can't remember what was said, but I know he convinced me that she was lying and I was the only one he loved.

The next night my world fell apart. I found out that he had been seeing her all summer long. That he was still seeing her, while HE WAS SEEING ME. I was crushed. I repeatedly called his house that night so I could confront him but the line was busy. I finally got a hold of him after midnight. I made him tell me the truth and he admitted that he had only gotten back with me so he could hurt me the way I had hurt him a few months ago. I told him I hated him. I broke the 45 of Madonna's Crazy For You single ("our" song) on the phone and told him that was the sound of my heart breaking. Then I hung up the phone. The next day I mailed the broken pieces to him.

And I didn't talk to him for 20 years. Even though we lived in the same town. Even though he worked right next to my husband in the lumber mill. Even though our children were in grade school together. Even though my middle daughter and his second son were in the same class at a very small school. Even though this same daughter and son dated for awhile. Not once. Not until that same daughter and son graduated from 8th grade. And at that 8th grade graduation we talked to each other. We said, "hi." That was it.

In that 20 years apart, a lot happened. Here is the shortest version I know how to provide.

Me:

Met and married a man that was 9 years older than me and had been married one before. I turned 20 one month after the wedding. He also had a 4 year old daughter when I met him.
I quit college and went to work full time at the bakery until I got pregnant and ended up having an ectopic pregnancy.
Had 3 babies in 3 1/2 years.
Was a full-time mom, gardener, chef, nurse, teacher, etc. until the youngest started kindergarten and then I got a part time job.
Lost our house, moved back to the company town, and went back to college.
Full-time student, full-time mom, full-time everything.
Finished school with a BA in Elementary Education.
Started seeing my previously-night-shift husband full time and realized...yeah.
Said hi to HIM at graduation.
Moved out on my own for the first time in 20 years. Without my kids for the first time in my life.
Made lots of dumb mistakes.
Decide to turn over a new leaf on June 1, 2007

Him:

Quit school and went to work in the woods with his dad.
Got the bad girl from a few paragraphs up pregnant when he was 16.
Tried to be a dad to his son, but was prevented by the mom.
Wrecks cars.
Gets married and goes to jail the next day for drunk driving.
Has 3 kids and is a great dad.
Gets a divorce when the youngest is 1.
Sustains a major back injury at the lumber mill that leaves him permanently unable to work.
Gets thrown in the slammer a few more times for drunk driving.
Says hi to ME at graduation.
Gets arrested for drunk driving and sent to San Quentin for 3 months and rehabilitation facility for 9 months.
Gets out of rehab on May 23, 2007

Contributions to Society

We are a country made up of many cultures and ethnic groups. Our country has been referred to as a melting pot - where all peoples come together and and eventually are all the same. We have been referred to as a stew - where all peoples come together and take on some of the "flavors" of those around them while retaining there own distinct flavor and colors. And the United States has been referred to as a salad - where all peoples come together and make a delicious meal but each ingredient is unique and retains it's own flavor. I think all of these have been accurate descriptions of our country throughout history. As Americans began to call themselves "American" it was the desire of many to have everyone be the same. It was the desire of some in charge of running the country and it was the desire of some coming to this country. That would be the "melting pot philosophy." Then as leaders and the common man began to see the value in other cultures, America took on the "stew philosophy." We could take on some of the aspects of other cultures while retaining our own cultural traits. The "salad philosophy" is like we are one country but everyone is distinct. Each culture is equally valuable and together makes up a great nation.

Not all subscribe to anyone of these philosophies. I can see positives and negatives in all of them. Regardless of what your own personal philosophy of the many varied cultures that make up America is, I hope we can all agree on one thing. That one thing, is that America would not be the prosperous and blessed nation that we are without contributions of people from all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds. I could start this series by focusing on the contributions of people from my ethnic background - German and Eastern Europe. However, since Hispanics are such a major portion of public and political discourse these days, I have decided to start with that ethnic group.

Even before I lost a couple of followers over my last post, I had decided that I wanted to do this, so this post is not for that reason. It's because I recognize that I wouldn't be where I am today with out contributions by courageous, brave, intelligent men and women from all countries. Also, my grand-daughter has Hispanic blood running through her veins. I want her to be proud of every bit of "her" history. If I am going to help her to learn about her story, I have to be educated myself.

I found this great website called Hispanic Contributions to the United States of America. Here is just a small amount of the information I learned there.

In the Mexican-American War, Captain Juan Seguin and other Hispanic Texans fought at the Alamo against General Santa Anna's soldiers, essentially fighting alongside American heroes Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Travis.

Father Junipero Serra, founder of the California missions, became a pioneer in the fight for human rights for the Native Americans.

In medicine, Dr. Walter Reed is generally credited with originating the theory of yellow fever transmissions by mosquitoes. The truth is that he only confirmed this theory. Carlos Juan Finlay, a modest Cuban physician, was the one who actually originated it.

In the art world, muralist Diego Rivera became known not only in Mexico but throughout the world. He painted murals not only in Mexico but also in Detroit, San Francisco, and New York City. He was married to another famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.

Dr. Ellen Ochoa, in 1990, was the first Hispanic woman to become an astronaut. She served on a nine-day mission aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1993. The astronauts were studying the Earth's ozone layer.

Where would migrant farm workers be without Cesar Chavez? He co-founded the United Farm Workers with another Hispanic, Dolores Huerta. This organization helped farm laborers get improved working conditions and better wages. He was also committed to limiting immigration and against the practice of hiring undocumented workers as strike-breakers.

Remember the movie, Stand and Deliver? The movie told the story of Jaime Escalante and his ability to reach East Los Angeles students through calculus. It starred Edward James Olmos (a famous Hispanic actor) as Jaime.

And I have to add Selena and the portrayer of her in the movie, Selena, Jennifer Lopez. (Edward James Olmos was in this movie too.) Selena was often called the Queen of Tejano music and was just to about to start a cross-over to American radio when she was murdered by the president of her fan club.

I could list hundreds of Hispanics that have made contributions to society and America. As Americans, we should always remember that North America wasn't discovered by Europeans. This continent existed for centuries before any white man set foot on the soil. Once those first Europeans arrived and the nation of the United States was established, this has been a country of various peoples from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We are a better nation for the contributions made by these people.

How Childish Are You?

I am curious...and I like to have the last word. In response to my post about Arizona's tough new immigration law, I lost a couple of followers. Big deal, their choice. In that post I included a link to a previous post where I vented some frustrations about illegal immigration and how it affected me personally. How childish do you have to be to do the following? Some one commented on that post and asked me a question that I would be happy to answer for them. Here is the problem...they didn't have the intestinal fortitude (guts) to leave a name with their comment. Um..how would you like me to answer a question if I don't know who you are. Here is the question they asked.

You make excellent points.

I'm curious, did your ancestors have green card or any working document ready to show when they arrived on Ellis Island? I'm guessing no. That is all.

Now, I'm guessing that this was a comment left by one of those who are no longer following me. I readily admit that I have stopped following some blogs because the author held beliefs that I did not agree with. Let me also say, I follow many blogs where I don't agree with everything that everyone posts. The one or two I have stopped following were way out there in my opinion. Ultimately, if someone doesn't want to follow me, then please leave if you don't enjoy what I write. I'm fine with that.

Back to the question and my answer. As a matter of fact, yes, my ancestors had all the proper documentation they were required to have when they came to this country. THEY FOLLOWED THE RULES.

And, in fact, my maternal grandmother traveled 4 times back and forth between the United States and Hungary between the ages of 2 and 16. Her parents came to this country for a better life. When she was 2 they returned to Hungary to help out HER grandparents. She returned to the U.S.A. by herself when she was 15 so she could maintain her American citizenship. She left her parents in Hungary, her father working hard and her ill mother helping out when she could. She then went back to Hungary again, BY HERSELF to retrieve her parents. Unfortunately her mother passed away while in Hungary and her father would not return to the United States without his wife. My grandmother (now 16) then got on another boat bound for the USA with her cousin who was 18 and a friend who was also 16. These ocean voyages took weeks. They didn't have any one traveling with them to insure their safety. But they filed the proper paperwork to leave and return to this country every time because they wanted to be Americans.

My ancestors wanted to have a better life. They wanted to contribute to a nation they believed in. They didn't come to this country and immediately start engaging in illegal activities. They didn't try to smuggle their relatives into the country in their steamer trunk. They worked hard, they paid taxes, they owned property and they left a legacy that spans several generations. My grandmother never regretted her decision to come to this country without her father. She missed him and was sad that she would never see her parents again.

One more point I would like to make before I get off my soapbox. Many that come to this country illegally -and I know there are illegals in this country who are NOT Hispanic - they claim that they come to this country illegally because the paperwork and the requirements are so stringent and costly and time-consuming. Wanna know something? It's much easier to get into this country now than it was 100 years ago. Do you think that the requirements weren't stringent back then? Do you think the paperwork wasn't costly back then? Do you think it wasn't time-consuming back then? People who TRULY want to be American citizens will do what it takes legally, not matter the cost, the time, the restrictions.

"Get Your Glam On" Fashion Show Review - part 2

Now on to the "Get Your Glam On" Fashion Show Review............

This next outfit was like a math equation 3-1+1 = a great outfit!

This outfit started out with a matching tunic top - but we wanted to give the outfit a different direction - so it was out with the typical and enter the stylish two-color velour mini dress now top over cotton India pants and a sash wore as a headband. Ending with some fabulous bronze heels...

Urban Chic - would wear well in the city or enjoying the life in the country.............

A green sleeveless dress topped with a gray button vest, belted together with a green and purple flower design belt - adorned with a wooden bead necklace, scarf and a leather backpack style bag ......

"Woodstock" was the first word spoken by the some of the audience when Evelyn came out in this 60's- inspired outfit. A purple suede zip up dress becomes a vest over the red turtle neck with a bit of modern update with the black corset belt. The blue jeans have red roses embroidered down one leg and the pant legs are tucked into a pair of brown thick heeled ankle high brown boots.

This outfit Callie is wearing displays the use of different textures and layers using only black and white as the colors. The three-quarter length sleeve is a thick, fiber-woven top, with a black and white checked slim skirt over a pair of footless leggings and a pair of black and white vintage pumps.

This equestrian-inspired outfit started with a pair of authentic riding jodhpurs and a grey turtle neck and a red plaid buttoned blouse with elastic at the waist and ruffles on the bodice area and a red and black trimmed jacket and brown leather knee-high boots with buckles. I think Callie is looking for her riding crop....

I'm seeing spots.....

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

Genesis is having fun taking a stroll with a polka dotted dresses with an 80's flair. She is wearing a white, button-up blouse with small black polka dots underneath a strapless cotton, dark pink dress with large black polka dots. A thin knit shirt with floral designs becomes a pair of leggings and the ankle high black boots give it a rebel flair. So Awesome!!!

Miss Evelyn is wearing a pair of black slacks that features a darling vintage appeal with the embellishments in front - styled after a "sailor's " look - there are buttons down each side trimmed in a vanilla white. The thin strapped vanilla color, sequined tank was too long at first and hid the front the slacks - so a knot was made at the side where the tank had a drawstring feature and the strings came out of the middle of the knot..... Black and white bangles with a vintage drawstring bag adorned with beads finish the look.

'Lil Miss Sunshine

Molly appears refreshed in this pale yellow knee length dress. It has a fitted top with some ruching in matching organza around the top. The full skirt makes it a fun dress to wear. It is a beautiful contrast to Molly's dark eyes and locks.

Disco Fever

Here is Makala in a shiny out-of-sight outfit. She is wearing a short-sleeved gold sequin mini-dress. Her wedge heels were refashioned to complete the look - they started off being espadrilles with crocheted lace in the wedges, this was carefully removed and the soles masked with tape and spray painted in a metallic gold. Next, a thin layer of all-purpose tacky glue was applied to the whole heel, then sprinkled heavily with metallic gold large flake glitter. She was accessorized with silver belt and necklaces to compliment Lexi.

Flower Child - this one was a fun outfit to put together.....

She is wearing a rust-colored sweater mini-dress with Dolman sleeves. Layered under the dress is a burgundy tutu with fall leaves in the hem. Across the body is a patchwork corduroy messenger bag, a headband of burgundy ribbon with smaller leaves flow nicely with Genesis long hair. Her shoes - which she is holding in her hand because she came out skipping along the runway - are tall heeled with green straps that buckle around the ankle and are adorned with a purplish flower across the toes.

This darling vintage purple dress came in and it just had to go in the fashion show....

It is a 50's era dress with a straight waist and a full skirt fitted bodice and short sleeves. To bring it up to date, it was paired with a brown blazer with the sleeves pushed up, brown knee length boots and a vinyl see-through messenger bag. Evelyn's sassy short hairstyle is an asset to this outfit.

Baby It's Cold Outside....

Here Callie looks stunning in this long slender evening gown of black and silver brocade. Keeping her warm is a black faux-fur bolero jacket. And topped off with a frosty white rose headband.

Off To The Kentucky Derby and then Tea with the Queen....

Molly is back with another classic outfit in this back with small white polka dot print dress that has layers at the hem to give it a full look. It also repeats the layered look in the collar and two white buttons at the neckline for accent. A black hat with a scarf tied around the brim, long white gloves and a jeweled bracelet, a vintage black clasp top purse and black sling back heels complete this look. One lump or two?

of course in Hawaiian, Aloha means both Hello and Goodbye so Genesis is the last girl in part two....

...and she is ready to hit the beach and a luau with this authentic Hawaiian made sun dress. Genesis is wearing a red with white hibiscus and palm all-over print design. Her flip-flops are made from wood.

Arizona and New Immigration Laws

If you watch or read the news at all, you know that Arizona recently passed a tough illegal immigration law. According to an article in my morning paper that was submitted by the Associated Press, Arizona has "become the center of national immigration debate." If you don't know what the law is about, to put it plainly, the new law "makes it a state crime to be in the U.S. illegally and it directs police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal." Lawmakers and our own coconut in the White House have declared the law unconstitutional and have said it will lead to racial profiling and harassment by the police.

In signing this policy into law, Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona has stated,

"The new state misdemeanor crime of failure to complete or carry an alien registration document is adopted verbatim from the same offense found in federal statute," she said. "I will not tolerate racial discrimination or racial profiling in Arizona."

I think most of my readers know how I feel about immigration, especially the illegal kind. If you aren't sure or don't remember, you could read a post about my feelings here. I applaud Governor Brewer and her courage to take care of a situation in her state that has been all but ignored nationally for generations. Every president promises to do something about illegal immigration, but none of them actually follow through. Why? Because the Hispanic population carries a lot of political weight. They lobby, they boycott, they are a force to be reckoned with. And I am not against legal immigration. I'm all for it. At one point or another, almost all of us have ancestors that immigrated to North America.

For those that think Governor Brewer is wrong in trying to protect the state she is responsible for, let me share a few statistics that were in that same news article I read this morning.

Arizona is home to approx. 460,000 illegal immigrants
In the past 3 yrs. Border Patrol agents in Arizona have arrested an avg. of 900 illegals entering Arizona EVERY DAY
Federal agents seized approx. 1.2 million pounds of marijuana in Arizona last year. That is roughly 1.5 tons PER DAY
Last week 67 illegals were found crammed into the back of a U-Haul entering Arizona. This happens EVERY DAY

These figures represent just ONE of the states that border Mexico. I live in California and I'm sure there are similar statistics for my state. We can look at this situation in another way. Although I have never traveled outside of the U.S. I know there are certain requirements for doing so.

To cross the border out of the USA I must carry a passport.
To travel to MEXICO:

If I'm under 18, I am required to also carry notarized permission from my parent or guardian

If I'm planning an extended stay to any country I need a visa.
I can expect that I will be questioned about my travel plans as I leave the US and as I enter the country I am visiting
I can expect that my travel documents will be inspected when I leave the US and I enter the country I am visiting
I can expect that if I am stopped for any reason while in the foreign country, I will be required to show identification and the documents that allow me to be in that country.

These requirements are for my own protection, the protection of the United States and the protection of the country I am visiting. Why is that so hard to understand? Why should we not require and expect the same of people that are in OUR country. Why do we feel sorry for those that enter our country illegally? Why do we think we need to offer them amnesty from entering the country illegally and then provide them with citizenship? (As the coconut in the White House wants to do). I JUST DON'T GET IT!

By no means am I telling you how to think or feel or vote. If you support tougher immigration legislation, let your coconut and political representatives know. If you support more lenient immigration policies, let the powers that be know that too. This is OUR country and we have elected these people to do what we want them to. If they don't know how we feel, they certainly can't make informed decisions.

You all know how I feel about it. I routinely contact my legislators on any number of issues that concern me. Do I know that they consider my opinions when they vote? No. Do I know that I have done my part as a citizen to make my opinions known and voiced for what I believe will make our country better? You betcha'.

I Just Finished Reading...

...Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball. This was the first book written by Ball, who is descended from one of the earliest settlers of South Carolina; Elias "Red Cap" Ball. By doing exhaustive research into oral family history, meticulous plantation records, and even an advertisement in local newspapers, Ball was able to tell a narrative of family history that keeps one captivated. His writing style flowed easily and the story was told with all the twists and turns of a mystery/action/romance novel.

Ball was able to connect with descendants of former slaves that had lived on the Ball plantations from the early 1600's up until the middle of the 20th century. These weren't just people who had relatives on the Ball lands. These were blood relatives, in many cases, to Edward Ball himself. In reading this family history, I also gained a better understanding of American history. The history of native people on the soil that would become the United States, the history of the slave trade to Charleston, South Carolina, the history of the participation of slaves in the Revolutionary War, and the history of the Civil War all became clearer to me as I read this book.

This is the only book written by Edward Ball that I have read so far, however I am interested in reading some of his other books as well. I'd really like to read his book, The Genetic Strand: Exploring a Family History Through DNA, which takes a closer, more scientific look into the lives of his ancestors that were introduced in Slaves.

Another of his titles was co-authored with Edwina Harleston Whitlock, a relative of Ball's and an ancestor to the relationship of one of Edward Ball's uncles and his black slave. This was a relationship that lasted many years and produced several children. This family history is looked at more closely in The Sweet Hell Inside: The Rise of an Elite Black Family in the Segregated South. The are characters that are introduced in Slaves in the Family.

Since almost all of my ancestors immigrated here from Europe after the Civil War, I don't think there are any slaves in my family, not directly any way. But who knows, I'm sure there are a few skeletons in the closet I haven't discovered yet. How about you? Do you have slaves in your family?

Don't know what that is? Well, according to Merriam-Webster, a bibliophile is simply a "lover of books." Ask anyone to tell you one thing that I have lots of, and most will tell you books. I can't ever remember not knowing how to read. And even as I was reading on my own, my parents were still reading to me and my siblings. My mom would read her magazines and romance novels; my dad would read Tarzan and Louis Lamour books. A love of the written word has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I was looking through my overstuffed Google Reader and came across a post from Faith, Family, and Fun. It was all about the Top 100 Children's Novels. She got her list from SchoolLibraryJournal.com, which conducted a poll and then compiled a list of the 100 most listed books.

When I was going to college, one of my required courses was Children's Literature. I loved it! I still read books that would be considered children's literature. I read those that have been around for nearly 100 years and things written within the last 10 or 20. I love books! I chose a different website for my list of 100 books. I went to librarybooklists.org, a site I became familiar with when I was taking that college course. There are so many different kinds of lists here that I couldn't choose just one. So, I took a few books off of each of the various lists.
So like quinnschilling at Faith, Family, and Fun, I have listed my Top 100 Children's Books and Novels. I have read all of these! I can't believe it. In fact, some of these have been read more than once, some many times. I recommend each and every one of these books. Some are for younger children and some are for older children. All are for grown-ups. They are perfect to read on one's own or as a family read aloud.

If the author has a website or blog, I have also listed that. Many of these author sites have more than just information on the author and the books their books. Many have interactive pages for kids (or kids at heart) and pages that provide lesson ideas for using the book as a teaching tool.

I will be the first to admit that I have suffered from a poor body image complex. All through high school I thought I was fat and my larger-than-average breasts earned me all kinds of nick names (most notably, Knockers.) Yeah. I have looked at pictures of myself as I have aged and um...grown and always made jokes and felt disgusted. But looking back on my teen-age years I realize I wasn't fat. I was a normal girl that had curves. Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, curves. My high school sweetie, who is now my BunBun always told me and still does, that I'm beautiful. Why do we not listen to those around us who tell us these things? Is it because they tell us positive things about our bodies and such, but look negatively at themselves? Do we continue to do this with our own children? I know that there have been many times I have told my children they are beautiful, aren't fat, etc. while saying the exact opposite about myself.

I do have a more positive self image than I did in high school. I have learned to appreciate and love the curves God has given me. My husband tells me I am beautiful inside and out and...let's be honest here...loves my body too. Well, it's time to do my part to promote positive self body image. Here goes folks....like it or not, this is me. And I'm beautiful.

These are my calves, which I may or may not have referred to in the past as "full-grown cows" and "turkey drumsticks." But they help me climb stairs and hills like no body's business.

So what brought all this on? Did I watch one too many Dove soap commercials promoting real women and true beauty? Did I watch one too many episodes of Intervention featuring anorexic and bulimic girls? Nope. I read the blog Mom Tried It and her post about the image we have and promote to our children and others around us. Kim hit the nail on the head and said what she had to say so succinctly. She has a blog hop going on. Go check it out if you are interested.

And look in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful. It's true, you know.

....you can recycle infant car seats? Yep, it's true. I just read it over at The Snyder 5. Molly Snyder does a regular post on recycling "cans" and "can'ts" and she just posted about this great company called Baby Earth that will accept all kinds of baby items like strollers, high chairs, and car seats and will recycle them. It's free and you get a $5 gift certificate to Baby Earth. They carry all kinds of eco and organic baby items. Wow...this is really exciting!

...that aprons are really big right now? I posted about the adorable ones Starla had made. And her and I have been adding all sorts of "stuff" to our pile-to-keep at Ruth's Room to turn into too stinkin' cute aprons. And....Disney over at Ruffles and Stuff just posted a tutorial on how to make an apron from a t-shirt. Way Cute! I love aprons and I think they add a bit of femininity and nostalgia that is so needed in this day and age.

...Piper, the daughter of one of my besties had a well-written Letter to the Editor published in our local newspaper? This girl is a testament to what a loving, stable, God-fearing, Christian family can accomplish if they set their minds to it. Piper is a college freshman who was recently told by her Public Speaking teacher that she COULD NOT give a persuasive speech against abortion, although someone else in the class is being allowed to give a speech on the benefits of assisted suicide. Piper decided to change the topic of her speech to the benefits of adoption. And then she wrote this letter to our local paper. Way to go, Piper! You make us all proud.

Christians and Earth Day

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Earth Day is on April 22. For many of us, it a chance to educate our children about being good stewards of what God has provided to us through nature. We might pick up trash on the beach or plant flowers and trees. But I also know there are other views out there. While attending Humboldt State University Earth Day was a huge ordeal with all kinds of drum circles and speeches and general "good vibes." I have never really celebrated Earth Day and so I wanted to see what its origins were and how Christians should respond to it. Here is what I discovered.

Earth Day was started in 1969 by a peace activist by the name of John McConnell. As a young adult in 1939, McConnell was working in a plastics factory. His experiences there helped him realize how much pollution happens from just one factory. Before initiating Earth Day, McConnell was active in peace and awareness movements around the world. His focus was often on providing food for hungry and peaceful communication and cooperation among nations in regards to space exploration and education.

In the fall of 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin gave a speech to a conservation group in Seattle. His vision of Earth Day would be a nationwide teach-in on environmental issues. Nelson was hoping that a grassroots effort would take hold and prevail on Washington D.C. to bring to light how the average American felt about environmental issues and thus affect change in policy. Nelson's efforts paid off and Earth day "went global" in a short period of time.

However, lest you think all was rosy and with good intentions, let me share some quotes from the essays written for the sole purpose of distribution in support of Earth Day. These were created with the encouragement and support of those who initially planned an observance of Earth Day back in 1969/70. The following information was gathered from several different sites. Each one is listed with the info I gathered there.

From the April 2009 issue of Forcing Change, the following quote was used to encourage leaders to promote Earth Day. Does it sound anything like Al Gore and his global-warming fantasy?

Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb, contributed a doomsday scenario to ignite impressionable minds: By 1973 air pollution would be choking cities, causing single-event smog disasters with death tolls in the hundreds of thousands – all heralding the advent of a global air quality collapse that would make the “planet uninhabitable” sometime before 1990. By the mid-seventies, the US grain belt would be turning into the great Mid-western desert, wiping out food stocks. During this time period, Ehrlich speculated, America’s resource sector would be collapsing and a national “family planning” program would have to be set up alongside an international agenda to curb the human population. By the summer of 1979, the world’s oceans would be dead and all sea-based animal life extinct.13

When it comes to Earth Day and religion, the teaching materials in Forcing Change were radically non-Christian/Judeo based.

“Christianity, in absolute contrast to ancient paganism and Asia’s religions…not only established a dualism of man and nature but also insisted that it is God’s will that man exploit nature for his proper ends.

"At the level of the common people this worked out in an interesting way. In antiquity every tree, every spring, every stream, every hill had its own genius loci, its guardian spirit. These spirits were accessible to men… Before one cut a tree, mined a mountain, or dammed a brook, it was important to placate the spirit in charge of that particular situation, and to keep it placated. By destroying pagan animism, Christianity made it possible to exploit nature in a mood of indifference to the feelings of natural objects.” [p.20-21, Lynn White Jr.].

“No new set of basic values has been accepted in our society to displace those of Christianity. Hence we shall continue to have a worsening ecologic crisis until we reject the Christian axiom that nature has no reason for existence save to serve man.” [p.25, Lynn White Jr.].

"Wilderness is a bench mark, a touchstone…New perspectives come out of the wilderness. Jesus, Zoroaster, Moses, and Mohammed went to the wilderness and came back with messages…This handbook, and the teach-in it serves, have their beginnings in wilderness.” [p. 148, Kenneth Brower].

There is worship that should be celebrated however(according to Earth Day proponents), the worship of Gaia-Mother Earth. And, according to these proponents, we should not be angering "our mother." The Dalai Lama said

“Until now…Mother Earth has somehow tolerated sloppy house habits. But now human use, population, and technology have reached that certain stage where Mother Earth no longer accepts our presence with silence. In many ways she is now telling us, ‘My children are behaving badly.’ She is warning us that there are limits to our actions…”

From the website of the American Policy Center I found the following quote.

One of the prime spokesmen for the Gaia earth religion is Father Thomas Berry, a dissident Catholic priest and a leader of the Temple of Understanding, located in New York City. Father Berry contends that Christianity promotes "deep cultural pathology of human greed and addiction." He advocates that the earth is disintegrating and that Christianity is mostly to blame.

Father Berry believes that we are now entering an era of "earth consciousness" and he heralds a new era he calls the "Ecozoic Age" that will transcend God. Father Berry suggests that we will have to remove the idea that only humans are created in the likeness of God

.

So am I saying that as Christians we should just go about the business of living and not care a hoot about pollution and the condition of natural resources? Definitely not! God expects us to be good stewards of all that He provides for us. This includes our family, our money, our time, and our earth. But the earth was created by an all-powerful God for use by His ultimate creation, man.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

Genesis 1:28-30 (KJV)

The Bible also provides very clear and precise instructions when it comes to who and what should be worshiped.

"You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments."
Exodus 20:3-6 (NIV)

So what should Christians do about Earth Day? If your child's class or school is having an Earth Day celebration (which most do), make sure your child understands that we don't worship the earth but we do take care of what God has given us. This is a lesson that can be taught at anytime. I see no reason we can't take part in keeping our earth healthy by recycling, shopping responsibly, planting flowers and trees when possible, and following the laws of our government in relation to pollution, etc. But these are things I strive to do all the time anyway. I don't need a special day to tell me to do these things. And I certainly won't be saying a prayer for Gaia, or beating a drum, or having a party to celebrate earth's gifts to me. God has given me all that I have and I give Him the glory for the gifts He has given me.

This is one of the first songs BunBun played for me when we got back together after our 20+ years apart. (I really need to tell that whole story sometime.) I had never heard it before. I don't know how I didn't, but I didn't. Anyway, now every time we hear it or we are playing 80's music and it comes on, we stop and dance. Sappy? I don't care. I'm totally and madly in love with this man and I don't care how sappy I sound, look, or act. I'm so thankful God chose to bless me for some unknown reason with this man. I have made many mistakes and committed many sins and I'm so thankful that God forgives me again and again. We will never be worthy of the love of the Father and I don't feel I deserve the wonderful husband I have. But thank you LORD for loving me enough to show me unconditional love with Your Son and with the gift of my husband.

Random Thoughts

Since I have been trapped in the house with the Crud, I've had a lot of down time. I recently found my Ipod Shuffle that my daughter, Callie gave me a couple of Christmases ago. I don't really listen to much of today's music, so there is mostly 80's music on my Shuffle. Thrown in with that is some Maroon 5, Jason Mraz, and even some Veggie Tales. (I'm a little different). Gimme some Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra too. I also have some great Christian artists on there. Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day,Point of Grace, Francesca Battistelli, and Keith Green.

Keith Green, for those of you that have never heard of him, was a musical artist called home to his Heavenly Father in 1982. I was 15 at the time and didn't even know Keith Green existed. My cousin had given me his So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt record and I probably had it laying around for a couple years before I actually listened to the whole album and what the songs were actually saying. It changed my life.

I know people have said that about music before, but I can't describe it any other way. God spoke to me through Keith's music. The songs helped me see my need to follow GOD completely and totally. The songs showed me how much GOD wants a relationship with us.

Soon my record player died and life went on. But every time I thought of those songs, they touched my heart. Sometime in the early 90's I came across No Compromise, the book written by Keith's wife, Melody Green.

This book told about Keith and Melody's conversion to Christianity and their journey to live out the Christianity of the Bible. It is an amazing story. It also showed my things about myself I hadn't realized before. Since I only had the one record of Keith's and record players are now dinosaurs, I wasn't sure I would ever hear those songs again.

Thank goodness for technology! I can now listen to these songs again thanks to iTunes.

I have become overwhelmed. Aside from being sick, my life seems to have gotten busier since I quit my job in December. I don't know how that happened, but anyway...

I used to be a "Check my google reader everyday" kind of girl. Sometimes more than once a day. And I was a pretty regular commenter on my favorites....and I have lots. But, somehow....I keep adding blogs to my reader and I'm finding that there aren't enough hours in the day to read all the stuff out there! If I miss looking at my reader for one day ~~DNFJDARIE~~ I don't know what to do. For some reason, I just can't hit the All Read button. It's like I'm being unfaithful or something.

Some of you are laughing at me right now. I know, I know, it's an illness. But there are some of you who know exactly what I'm talking about. I know how much all of you put into your posts, because I know how much I put into mine. I know we don't right solely to get comments, but it's nice to know you are being read.

So if you have wondered where I've been or why I stopped commenting, or you didn't even know I ever did.....I'm sorry. I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. I can promise you that I miss sitting and reading what all of you have written. So, I'm off to comment. I hope.

The Humboldt Crud

Yep...I've got it. I have decided to just admit it and be done with it. "What exactly is The Humboldt Crud," you ask?

Well...let me start by saying this.

Yes, I wash my hands frequently. Especially since I work with kids and the general public. But, nonetheless, these critters have taken up residence in my body. And in the words of Garrett...."Jesus likes us to share." Thanks for reminding me Garrett, but I don't think He meant this. And while I'm sure that Joseph's mother likes him to share, I'm guessing Tootie might be wrong when she suggested this was all Joseph's fault.

They arrived uninvited and I'm quite ready for them to leave. ~~They have outstayed their welcome.~~

I don't like uninvited visitors....especially the rude and disgusting kind.

My throat feels like this. I drink tea and honey. I gargle with salt water. I rub Vick's VapoRub (I love this stuff!) on my throat and chest. I suck on cough drops.

When I do this...several things happen at once.

I nearly pee my pants.
My feet feel like they are coming up through my chest.
My raging throat feels like sandpaper against flint.
I start whining and planning my funeral.

So you see... I have a bad case of the Humboldt Crud. The stuff is legendary around here. Parents sending their sweet wee ones to the local university are encouraged to pack them a Humboldt Crud Kit. Poems have been written about the Crud. And local health food stores know to carry Crud Cure for all us locals.

I'd done with it though. I'm ready to fight back with my herbs, teas, lozenges, juice, and vitamin C. If I don't make it out alive....well, don't come to the funeral. I don't want you to get the Crud.

Yes it is...and on Resurrection Sunday! When church ended on Sunday, we stepped out to see heavy rain and a few scattered snowflakes. In the few minutes it took to get from the church to my house, the snowflakes got thicker and bigger. I couldn't believe we got snow in April! We rarely get snow at this elevation during the winter. It was very pretty and a lovely reminder that through the death and resurrection of Jesus, God washes us whiter than snow. I just hope we don't see any more snow for a while. I'm ready for the sun!

The Passion

Even though Mel Gibson's film, The Passion of the Christ came out in 2004, it has eternal relevance. Yes I know that Mel Gibson is Catholic and I don't agree with most of the teachings of the Catholic church. But this movie still has the power to move me and to make me realize just a little bit more what my Lord and Savior went through so that I could have forgiveness.

Passion is often defined as any powerful or overwhelming feeling or emotion. We say of newlyweds, for example, that they share a great passion for one another. Or we might say someone is passionate about a cause they believe in strongly. Why is what Christ went through called "the Passion" then?

A class called Word Origins that I took while at College of the Redwoods had a unique assignment. Throughout the semester we were to collect words that interested, intrigued, fascinated us. At the end of the semester we would be graded on the number of words in our collection. One of the words I wondered about was "passion" and how it related to Jesus and His death. (Bear with me...I'll get to my point shortly). In this class we studied Greek roots of words, Latin roots of words, etc. and how by doing so you could figure out the meaning of a word by knowing what these roots meant.

The word passion comes from the 2nd century Latin root word passio, which means "to suffer." When I discovered this it made perfect sense to me. The Passion of the Christ could easily be translated as The Suffering of the Christ. But, oh, I knew it meant much more than that.

See, although Jesus did suffer intensely throughout his trial, crucifixion, and death, He also had a powerful and overwhelming feeling and emotion. He had a passionate desire to do His Father's will.
"Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch. He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will."

He also had a passionate love for those that He loved, his disciples, his accusers, those that would deny Him and those that would accept Him. (All of humanity.)

"My prayer is not for them alone [the disciples]. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."

What's Going On?!?

So many things are happening right now, I don't know where to begin! I guess I can just give my thoughts, opinions, views, etc on each one, but that could take all ~~day~~ week. I'll do my best to keep it brief.

*My church, Rio Dell Baptist Church has a Facebook page. If you click on the link, it will take you to the page.

*We have been having revival services all week at church and the Spirit of God has filled the building each and every night. We have a different speaker each night and it's amazing to see God working through each of these men.

*Our AWANA group is gearing up for its annual yard sale and the donations are starting to pour in. Lots of work, but well worth it when you realize the money will go to promote the gospel in our community and to help children memorize scriptures and come to know the Lord.

*A local church is experiencing some difficult times. One of its deacons recently was arrested for DUI and when the pastor of the church asked him to step down as deacon, many in the church became angry and said the the pastor had no right to do this. It was none of his business. What is wrong with this picture!?! A pastor has an obligation to the members of his church, the community, and GOD to do what is right and take a stance against Christ's bride looking like the rest of the world. Please pray that this church body will be restored, that the exiting pastor will be encouraged, and that the deacon will receive the help he needs.

For This Child I Prayed

Like Hannah in the Old Testament, I prayed for a son. Unlike Hannah, I was not barren and had every reason to feel happy and blessed. It was 1992, and I was a mommy to 2 1/2 year old Molly and 1 year old Callie. I had two precious little girls that I loved and adored, and yet like Hannah, my heart yearned for something more. A little boy. In my selfishness prayed, petitioned GOD to please, if it be HIS will, let us have a little boy to add to our family. In GOD's infinite wisdom, He chose to grant my request. Before I even conceived, God promised that I would have a son. On March 12, 1993, Levi James was added to our family. Throughout the pregnancy I had continually told other's of God's promise to me. Even though I had no sonogram, no genetic testing, I was convinced, because of God's promise, that I would have a baby boy. Others doubted, but I knew.

Tonight my recently-turned-17 year old son came to me and we had a conversation unlike any we have had before. Without going into too many details, I let my children down in a really big way a little over 4 years ago. It culminated in the divorce of the family they had come to know. I changed their world beyond anything I can even comprehend. Although God has forgiven me for the mistakes and sins I committed during that time, and even though I have sought my children's forgiveness, I have a hard time forgiving myself. My children still bear the hurts and the scars of that time. Speaking only from my own experience, there is a reason GOD has a plan or marriage to be the way He says. That is for a different post. Anyway, my son and I had a very emotional and grown-up conversation tonight. While my heart is aching for him in several ways, I want to say that my son is an amazing young man.

While he is not perfect, he is growing up to be someone I can say I'm proud to know. Only because God has chosen in His matchless grace to bless me, do I have an intelligent, hard-working, thoughtful son. He is nearing the end of his junior year in high school and he has major decisions to make in the next months and upcoming school year. Only God knows the perfect plan He has laid out for my son. Please join me in praying for this young man that I love beyond measure.

My Thomas Paul Matryoska Tote

I was recently given the opportunity by CSN.com to choose something from their over 200 stores online. The only thing required of me was to write a review of the product I chose. I chose a tote bag designed by Thomas Paul. To be more specific, I chose the Thomas Paul Matryoska Tote in red. The bag recently arrived, so here is my review.

The colors on the bag are outstanding and the graphics is absolutely adorable. It's a little hard to tell in this picture, but the pink part of the matroyska's dress is a little woodland scene with deer. It reminds me of Jan Brett illustrations. The handle is sturdy and the zipper is a good quality zipper. The tote is also nice and roomy, measuring 14" x 16". It's made from canvas so I can throw it in the wash if I need to. I haven't done that yet. The only thing I would say that is negative is that the canvas is not very thick. Yes, that makes the bag lightweight, but I'm not sure how it will stand up to wear and tear. The cost for this tote from csn.com is $36 which includes shipping. That's a good price, I suppose, for a designer tote. However, I'm a cheapskate and I would never have bought something for that price, no matter who the designer. I did appreciate being contacted by CSN stores and love my tote bag.

And in case you don't know what a matryoska is, according to wikipedia.com, it's a Russian nested doll or a babushka doll.

I Am Surrounded By Geniuses

I don't know how I got so blessed...but God's ways are not my ways so who am I to try to figure it out?

I have to start by saying...it feels like have been away forever! You know I was busy for awhile helping Starla put together the fashion show for Ruth's Room (still waiting on the pics for that, ugh!) Then I was attacked by a cold/flu bug that still has its little germs in me and while I was fighting that I had a dental emergency that required me to take antibiotics. Which caused me to break out! After spending $94 on them! Now on a 2nd antibiotic and doing well. The sun has been shining all week and I have been enjoying the time spent with BunBun. Next big project? The annual AWANA yard sale that I am spearheading.
Anyway...back to being blessed.

I've told you all about Gail and her amazing shoe-painting talent. And I've told you about Roger and his amazing air-brush painting talent. And now comes Starla and her amazing refashioned apron-making talent.

Gail recently bought a book/magazine called "Altered Couture."

I Just Finished Reading..."Why You Say It" by Webb Garrison

Thomas Nelson Publishing provided me with a complimentary copy of this book and 100 % of the opinions given here are my own unless otherwise stated.

This book explores the origins behind many of our everyday phrases and words. It gives a brief look into the past and explains why certain phrases became popular in the first place and why they have managed to stay in the lexicon of current usage. At 348 pages of actual reading material, the book covers topics from entertainment to food to conversation starters.

I love anything to do with words. Word puzzles, word origins, definitions, you name it. This book seemed like something I would enjoy reading and knowledge that I could add to the database inside my head. As I stated before, the nineteen chapters in the book cover a wide range of topics. I enjoyed reading some of the chapters, but seemed to plod on. A version of this book was originally published in 1955. The author explains in the introduction that in putting together this book he included words and phrases not even in use in 1955. However, I still found some of the material dated and obsolete. Does anyone still use the phrase "screaming meemies" to describe nervous or anxious behavior? First of all. I always thought the phrase was "screaming meanies" and referred to a group of loud and rambunctious youngsters. According to the book it was a phase that came into usage during WWII and often referred to case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

While this isn't a book that I will probably read again, it is a book that can be picked up and read in short bits. It gives an interesting look at why we use some of the phrases we use and the information just might come in handy for games like Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy.

R.I.P. Merlin Olsen

Today Merlin Olsen died at the age of 69. Many of you may recognize the name from his pro football career with the Los Angeles Rams. I remember him as Jonathan Garvey from the television show, Little House on the Prairie.

My Johnny Love

On March 11, 1940 one of the most-influential men in my life was born. Today is my dad's 70th birthday. I can't believe that so many years have passed since this was the number one man in my life. I am the oldest of 3 children in my family. For the first 3 1/2 years of my life, I had my parents to myself. Looking back, some might say I was spoiled, but I knew I was loved. I held my daddy's finger as we crossed the street. I stood by daddy in front of the church as he let me "help" him sing songs by The Happy Goodmans or The Blackwood Brothers. My dad taught me about the forgiveness and salvation found in the Bible by living it every day. My dad wasn't and isn't perfect. But he taught me that no matter what is going on, a relationship with Jesus is the most important thing a person can have. My dad is a wonderful story teller, a prayer warrior, and a faithful servant of GOD. I am so thankful that God in His infinite wisdom chose John Fred Mock to be my earthly father. Maybe that's why I have a thing for Johnnys.

You all know of my adoration for Johnny Depp, as I have posted about him a few times in the past. I'd like to share a couple of pictures that I recently had taken with Johnny as the character of Captain Jack Sparrow.

That's right! I'm givin' him a big kiss!

This awesome portrait was painted by my brother in Christ, Roger Sanderson. Roger has a business where he does custom air brush painting. He has been painting portraits of famous people for commissions and to place in a newly opened local shop that specializes in local artists and crafters. Unfortunately, this was not painted for me, but I was thrilled to get to hold him for just a second.

So how did I get my hands on this artwork for even just a second? Roger is the wonderful worship leader at our church. He was at the church this day to help Starla and I set up he sound system for the fashion show. I spotted Johnny riding along in the front seat and begged for a picture with him.

...but i wanted to put this out there. i don't really feel like capitalizing right now, so please deal with it if that kind of thing bugs you. i have all sorts of wonderful things to post this week, but i was sort of weary yesterday morning. the anticipation for the fashion show was high and satan and his minions were ready to attack. GOD is always victorious though. so...before the fashion show began, i gathered the girls and two of our helpers in a back room to pray while starla went to spiritual battle. the power of the holy spirit took over during the prayer and i felt like i was about to fly through the roof. GOD IS ETERNALLY VICTORIOUS! that's all i have to say, except i leave you with the following scripture.

Love Is In The Air

We were laughing hilariously at Neal and Karen Montgomery (the guest speakers) when this was taken.

This is a photo taken at the Valentine's Dinner our church recently held. Not the best picture, but shows how much we do enjoy laughing. It was a fun evening (BunBun admitted in front of 50 people that his butt is his best feature.) Neal and Karen are hilarious and so friendly. The meal was great...prime rib, baked potatoes, green beans, green salad, rolls, cheesecake...yum! Except I got sick the next day. From the meat. No one else did, but BunBun reminded me that the last time I ate seasoned meat the same caterer. No barfing but just feeling like it. REALLY BAD ALL DAY AND NIGHT. So that is how we spent this year's Valentine's Day. With friends, each other, and thanking God for one another.

Painted Shoes...Just For Me

I told you all I would be posting about some shoes my friend Gail painted for me. Well...here they are!

Aren't they absolutely divine?

I don't have a picture of what they looked like before, but imagine plain white pumps with a couple of cat scratches and a few cat bites. You see, they came into Ruth's Room. One day as we were cleaning up, Gail was telling Starla and I about these really cute shoes she had seen in a local store that looked as if they had been painted with acrylic paints. We told her she should try it and see how they turn out. She decided to take this beaten up pair of pumps that were still good (aside from the kitty damage). She figured if it didn't turn out there wouldn't be any big loss. I knew they would be fabulous because Gail is super-talented and has a God-given gift for artistic touches.

When she brought in just one shoe to show us her progress I about exploded with excitement! I knew they would look good...but this was great. She quickly finished the other one and brought both to show off to all the Ruth's Room volunteers. They were sitting on a table one afternoon and my daughter, Callie walked in.
"Are these my shoes?' she asked.
"No, they're mine," I replied, "you've stolen enough shoes from me, girly." (She just turned 19...how did that happen so fast?)
"No. I mean are these the shoes I brought in? The ones that Jordy chewed on?"
When Gail had chosen the shoes we had no idea they had been donated by Callie. Well, I assured her there was no way she was getting them back now! She could find another pair for Gail to paint for her.

So I'm sharing my shoes with you. Gail is very modest. While she is pleased with the way they turned out - the little dots all around the edges are her favorite element- she doesn't think that she did anything anyone else couldn't do. Well, maybe there are those out there that can, but I can't. And I know that if Gail wasn't my friend, there would be no way I could afford to buy shoes like this. It's not real clear in these pics, but each shoe is painted with the same elements, but is not identical. The background is a gorgeous turquoise. Tiny white dots border the edges at top and bottom and grass seems to be growing from the sole up onto the upper of the shoe. At the back of the shoe and all along the opening of the shoe are tiny pink and Merlot-colored flowers on a twisting vine. Each toe is accented with white dots in a dancing pattern.

I will be wearing these for the Get Your Glam On Fashion Show being put on by Ruth's Room. More on that next week! It's only a week away!!!

I'm trying to encourage Gail to paint more and let me sell them for her. What do you think? Is there a market out there for these kind of adorable and fantastic shoes?

The Big One-Zero-Zero

That's right folks...I hit the Big 100...One hundred followers!!! I can't believe it...I thought this day would never come back when I started this blog. I can't believe this is my first post. It's actually kind of embarrassing. It's amazing how things have changed. The Bean was born, I vented and laughed about our reality of dealing with illegal immigration on a day-to-day basis, and I have made some great bloggy friends.

I want say a big huge THANK YOU to all of you. You have all taught me so much. If you are one of my followers and I'm NOT following you, please let me know. I really do want to follow you back and I try to do so when I get new followers. Sometimes though, life gets in the way. Thanks for all the wonderful, kind, funny comments you have left. I enjoy each one of them.

Spring Flowers

Remember when I posted the tutorial for my fabric flowers and then I posted pics of the Bean and the flower headbands I made? Well I have made another flower and turned it into a bracelet for Starla this time.

I made this one really full; I used 8 circles of each size! That's a total of 24 layers of fabric. In the center is a 3-dimensional silver heart pendent (sorry I didn't get a better pic) that was from a bag of broken jewelry from my aunt.

Here is a pic of the back (another less-than-perfect pic). I sewed the completed flower onto a length of black organza ribbon I had left over from some past project. Evelyn, Starla's daughter, now wants one. They are so easy to make! I'm having tons of fun making them. Have you tried one yet?

Even though Spring is still a ways off, the weather around here hasn't been too horrible. With these fabric flowers though, I can make sure Spring is with me everywhere I go. I was browsing around Artfire recently and come across some other lovely fabric flower creations I'd like to share with you.

First I would like to tell you about Tiffani at Cutienessers. I did a search for fabric flowers and her shop was the first one I stopped by.

I'm Getting a Designer Tote

I was recently contacted by CSN about doing a review of one of their products. CSN is an online site that has over 200 stores from which to shop. I was told I could choose anything from any of the 200+ stores connected with them, within a certain price range

One of the first stores I "stopped by" was the barstools store. BunBun and I don't have a dining/kitchen table, but we do have a wide counter that doubles as our eating area. Currently we have two thrift store stools sitting there. Nothing wrong with that, but it would be nice to upgrade to new bar stools. Since we could have only chosen one bar stool (and that wouldn't really do) I decided to shop around and see what else I could find. I looked at pet items, strolled down the "aisles" of the lamp boutique, and even looked at place settings.

I eventually ended up at Luggage.com and chose this Thomas Paul Matryoska Tote in Red. I'm so excited to be receiving this. As soon as it arrives you can be sure I will be taking photos and writing a review. In the mean time, go check out the CSN stores and see what goodies you find.

Starla and I watched these to get an idea of how a "real" fashion show looks. We have been preparing to do a fashion show for Ruth's Room at our church. Now, we know we are not hip, eccentric fashion designers and that all the world will not notice our little fashion show. But we want to do it with a level of class and polish that will get our cause noticed. Ultimately, we want to glorify God in all we do. It's just fun sometimes to look at what all the hoity-toity types are doing. Whether you like this particular designer or the clothes, I have to say some of the details of these outfits is amazing. It gives me all kinds of ideas for new kinds of little lovelies!

I finally got to watch my dear sweet Johnny Depp in Public Enemies.

Ok, no movie with Johnny Depp in it is a bad movie, but I was a little disappointed. I didn't know anything more about John Dillinger after watching that movie than I did before. Is it possible I know everything there is to know about John Dillinger? No way! Not even I can know that much! Could the people who made this movie have told us more about Dillinger? Probably. Will I watch this movie again? Probably...Johnny is in it...duh! Will I buy it...nah. I'll wait for something really good like Alice in Wonderland.

I haven't mentioned this before (I don't think) but I love Johnny Cash.

And...this love affair started long before the talented Joaquin Phoenix and cute-as-a-button Reese Witherspoon were in Walk the Line. I grew up listening to Johnny sing as we traveled down I-5 to see my dad's sister and family in the Mojave desert. I knew (and still do) every word to "Ring of Fire" and "don't Take Your Guns to Town" and "Tennessee Flat Top Box." You know what I like best about Johnny Cash though? He would tell it to you straight. Once he got his life on the right track, he wasn't afraid to tell you where he had messed up and how God was what set him right. I like that kind of honesty.

Today is Valentine's Day, the day we celebrate love, romance, and that special somethin' somethin' with our spouses. And while I think it's great that there is a day set aside to remind us all how much love we are surrounded with, I hate the commercialization of special holidays. But that isn't what this post is about. It's about the most awesome love of all time. The love Jesus has for us that He would allow Himself to be crucified for our salvation. The Prettiest Flower in the Garden

Remember yesterday when I posted about my Fab-ric Flowers? Well, two of them were used to make headbands for my grand baby. I think they make her look like the prettiest flower in any garden.

Take a good look at the elasticized band. Does it look familiar?

It's an adjustable bra strap removed when I make my Brags. It's on the biggest size here for Natalia (sorry I didn't measure) so it will go smaller for a younger baby. I'm thinking of trying some other materials for straps as well, so I'll let you know how that all turns out.

Baby is here for a couple days. Please keep her in your prayers as she has double ear infections and also has to take albuterol for her cough/chest tightness. This is the first time she has had to take this and it takes me back to when Callie and Levi were both prescribed this as infants. Callie only needed one prescription of it. Levi on the other hand has dealt with asthma all his life. He hasn't let it stop him; he is very involved in sports and outdoor activities and from the looks of it, it's not going to keep Tally down either, no matter the outcome. Just for fun, here are some more photos of her.
